About Amitabh Bachchan
Bachchan’s transition from Bollywood’s “Angry Young Man” to a father figure in his later years has allowed him to stay at the top of the industry for over 40 years, and to this day, he maintains a huge following.
Helped greatly by his deep baritone voice, Bachchan quickly became a hit upon entering Bollywood, rising to prominence in the 1970s with hit movies Zanjeer and Sholay. His persona struck a chord with a population in search of a brash hero, and Bachchan regularly performed in violent roles.
An accident while filming for Coolie in 1982 left Bachchan close to death and his injury made headlines worldwide, even in countries where Bollywood is largely unknown. His global reach was made apparent once again in 1999, when the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) chose Bachchan as the greatest on-screen star of the millennium.
Following the injury from Coolie, he switched his attention to politics and won a huge majority in the general election seat he contested in 1984, but he lasted just three years before quitting due to discontent.
Despite his acting successes, Bachchan did endure a slump in the late 1980s and early 1990s and he retired, although it proved to be just a brief hiatus. Bachchan chose elder and more experienced roles upon his comeback, instead of the typical hero parts he had become accustomed to. His performance alongside Shah Rukh Khan in Mohabbatein helped him return to the limelight, and the 2001 movie Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham – which included Khan, Kajol, Hrithik Roshan and Bachchan’s wife Jaya – also earned him praise.
Bachchan has been very present on Indian television in recent years, and has hosted Kaun Banega Crorepati – India’s version of Who Wants to be a Millionaire – for over a decade. In 2014, he played the lead role in TV series Yudh – one of the most expensive shows in Indian television history.
Despite never expressing a desire to act in the West, Bachchan did make his Hollywood debut in 2013 as a favour to director Baz Luhrmann, playing Meyer Wolfsheim in The Great Gatsby. His latest Bollywood film Piku was released in May 2015 and involved two other big Bollywood stars, Deepika Padukone and Irrfan Khan.
Bachchan’s massive following makes him much sought after by his fans and well-wishers turn up outside of his house every Sunday, where he greets and addresses them.
Bachchan is married to Jaya Badhuri and they have two children. Their son Abhishek, is also a Bollywood actor and he is married to fellow actress Aishwarya Rai. Bachchan was awarded the Padma Vibhushan in 2015 – India’s second-highest civilian award. France have also honored the actor, making him Knight of the Legion of Honor in 2007.
