Born to parents Denise and Francisco Muniz III, Muniz began acting at the young age of eight. He was participating in a local talent show when he was discovered. He was quickly cast in the role of Tiny Tim in a theatrical production of A Christmas Carol. Not long after this performance, his parents separated and he moved to California with his mother.

While in California, Muniz appeared in several commercials before landing a part in the 1997 film To Dance with Olivia. Following this performance, Muniz appeared in two more films – What the Deaf Man Heard and Lost & Found. His performance in the latter of these two led to him being cast in his most well-known role as Malcolm in the series Malcolm in the Middle.
