About Kevin James
Born Kevin George Knipfing to parents Janet and Joseph Knipfing, Jr., he is better known by his stage name Kevin James. James was raised in New York with his two siblings. When he was in high school, James was a star wrestler. He placed first on his high school’s wrestling team, despite the fact that a now-WWE wrestling star was on his team. When he went on to college, James played for his university’s football team, but he was injured. The injury ended his dreams of becoming a professional sports player.
In 1989, James began his career in the entertainment industry by doing stand-up comedy. He gained popularity by doing guest appearances on popular shows, such as The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, and Late Show with David Letterman. James also briefly hosted his own comedy show called Kevin James: Sweat the Small Stuff.
The first television job that James landed was a job on a candid camera show, where he played jokes on unsuspecting people, who were then recorded. After appearing on a few more television shows, such as Everybody Loves Raymond, James received his own situational comedy, The King of Queens. He played the lead role in this show, which aired for ten seasons from 1998 to 2007.
Since his appearance on this hit television series, James has appeared in a number of movies. His movie debut was in the comedy Hitch, which also starred Will Smith. After this successful start, James starred in Grilled alongside friend Ray Romano. In 2007, James co-starred in the comedy I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry; the following year, he starred in You Don’t Mess With the Zohan; and in 2009, he starred in Paul Blart: Mall Cop. Despite the fact that the latter of these movies was received very poorly by critics, it was a huge box office success and eventually grossed over $200 million.
Since his success with Paul Blart: Mall Cop, James has appeared in Grown Ups, which stars several Saturday Night Live alumni, The Dilemma, and Here Comes the Boom. He also wrote, produced, and starred in Zookeeper.
James married actress Steffiana de la Cruz in 2004. The couple has four children together. Their three daughters, born 2005, 2007, and 2015, are named Sienna-Marie, Shea, and Sistine, respectively, and their son, born in 2011, is named Kannon. James is an avid sports fans, and supports many professional sports teams from New York, such as the New York Jets and the New York Knicks.
