About Shah Rukh Khan
Khan made his Bollywood debut in 1991 with the film Deewana, and he immediately gained recognition, winning the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut. He was initially not supposed to be a part of the project, but was given the role after a fellow actor walked out.
He spent much of the early part of his career as a villain. The psychological thriller movie Darr saw Khan play an obsessed lover, and the performance is still widely considered one of his best. He then won his first Best Actor Award in 1993, playing a double-role in Baazigar – a movie remembered for being his first alongside Kajol.
Khan’s big breakthrough came with Kajol in the 1995 film Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. The romantic movie, which has played continuously at the Maratha Mandir cinema in Mumbai since its release, is one of the most popular in Bollywood history. Many of Khan’s most iconic movies have been with Kajol, including Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham and My Name is Khan. They are set to collaborate again with the film Dilwale, which is to be released in December 2015.
Due to his stardom, once he established himself in the business, Khan has almost invariably acted as a hero. He has acquired a huge fanbase and is often referred to as SRK, King Khan and the Baadshah of Bollywood. His supporters can regularly be seen waiting for him outside of his Mumbai home Mannat.
Much of Khan’s career has been spent in a movie rivalry with Salman Khan and Aamir Khan – two other Bollywood actors. The three have enjoyed dominance over the film industry for over two decades, but the battle between the trio to be the king has been hotly contested. Shah Rukh’s 2013 film Chennai Express with Deepika Padukone was the most lucrative in Hindi cinema history, but Aamir then surpassed it months later with Dhoom 3, before increasing his lead with PK which released in December 2014.
More recently, Khan has gotten involved with sport. The inaugural Indian Premier League – a cricket tournament – took place in 2008 and Khan owns part of the Kolkata Knight Riders franchise with Bollywood actress Juhi Chawla. He expanded his sports profile earlier this year, when he bought a stake in Caribbean Premier League franchise Trinidad and Tobago Red Steel.
Khan has been married to Gauri Chibber since 1991 and they have three children together. Their most recent child, AbRam, was born in 2013 through a surrogate mother. While his wife is a Hindu, Khan is a Muslim.
