Her mother instilled in Whoopi that she needed to work hard and not let racial differences to bring her down. She encouraged Whoopi to see stage plays; and thus started Whoopi’s love affair with the theather. Whoopi was also influenced by watching Lieutenant Uhura in the original in the 1966 series, Star Trek .
