About Kenny Chesney
Chesney was born in Knoxville, Tennessee to parents David Chesney and Karen Chandler. After graduating from high school, Chesney received his first guitar for Christmas. He began teaching himself to play. He eventually released a self-recorded demo and sold over a thousand copies when he was performing in clubs. Using the money from his demo, he purchased a new guitar. After graduating college, Chesney moved to Nashville to pursue his country music dream.
Once in Nashville, Chesney was quickly recommended to a person at Opryland Music Group. After the first meeting and audition with Opryland Music Group, Chesney had his first songwriters contract. The following year, Chesney was featured in a songwriters’ showcase and was quickly signed to Capricorn Records. Chesney released one album with Capricorn Records, and then signed to BNA Records.
Throughout his career, Chesney has released fifteen albums, the most successful of which are When the Sun Goes Down, which was released in 2004, among others. Chesney’s tour known as the Flip-Flop Summer Tour, which took place in 2007, was the most successful country tour of all time. Chesney has received a number of notable awards. He was the recipient of the Entertainer of the Year Award, presented by the Country Music Association, in 2004, 2006, 2007, and 2008. He also received the award New Male Vocalist of the Year from the Academy of Country Music in 1997, the Top Male Vocalist of the Year Award in 2002 presented by the same organization, and the Triple Crown Award in 2005.
In January 2005, Chesney helped on a trip providing tsunami relief. He met actress Renee Zellweger, and four months later the two were married. By September, Chesney and Zellweger had filed for marriage annulment. Zellweger cited fraud as the reason for requesting the annulment. The press speculated that this might mean something about Chesney’s character, but Zellweger stated that it had nothing to do with his character and was pure legal jargon.
Chesney is incredibly active in philanthropic work. He volunteers for a number of charitable organizations. Most recently he has helped the V Foundation, which helps funds research to find a cure for cancer. He has also volunteered with Farm Aid, which is a group founded by fellow country music star Willie Nelson, Neil Young, and John Mellencamp. Farm Aid exists to help keep small family farms from being forced into foreclosure by mega-farms. Each year, there is a Farm Aid show and Chesney has performed four times, in 2005, 2008, 2010, and 2012.
