About Barbara Hershey
Barbara Hershey was born in Barbara Herzstein in Hollywood, California to Melrose and Arnold Herzstein. Her father was a horse racing columnist and his parents emigrated from Hungary and Russia. Her mother was a native of Arkansas and of Irish descent. Barbara, the youngest of three children, always wanted to be an actress. Nicknamed “Sarah Bernhardt”, she was shy and quiet in school; people thought she was deaf. In 1965, Barbara’s high school drama coach helped her find an agent and she soon landed a role on Sally Field’s television series, Gidget. She dropped out of high school and began acting.
After three episodes of Gidget, she had adopted the stage name of Hershey. The show helped her get other television roles. Because of her frequent television appearances, Hershey was accused of “selling out to the small screen.” She appeared in the ABC miniseries Stay the Night (1992), as well as the sequel series, Return to Lonesome Dove. Hershey was nominated for a Golden Satellite Award for another television appearance, The Staircase (1998). Between 1999 and 2000, she played Dr. Francesca Alberghetti in 22 episodes of the television drama Chicago Hope.
Barbara met David Carradine, while they were working on Heaven With a Gun. Their relationship lasted six years, yet still appeared in other films together. In 1972, they posed nude together in Playboy magazine, recreating some sex scenes from the movie Boxcar Bertha. Later that year, Hershey gave birth to their son, Free. Also at this time, Hershey change her stage name to “Seagull.”
In 1986, Hershey left California and moved to Manhattan. Three days later, she met Woody Allen who offered her the role of Lee in Hannah and Her Sisters (1986). The film won three Academy Awards and a Golden Globe. The film also earned Hershey a nomination for Best Actress in a Supporting Role. She described her part as a “wonderful gift”.
By the time Hershey was in her forties, she was described by the press as a “private person who was mired in some heavy publicity when she first became a professional actress.” In 1992, she married artist Stephen Douglas in Oxford, Connecticut. The only guests were their two mothers and Hershey’s son. They were divorced a year later.
Early in Hershey’s career, she had the reputation of being a hippie. She experienced conflict between her personal life and her acting goals. Her career suffered a decline during her relationship with David Carradine. Barbara Hershey is known as one of the greatest actresses of our time. Although her acting career became well-established again, she has stayed a private person.
