The family ended up living in the Richard Allen Homes which was a low-income housing project. When Cosby was eight years old he lost his brother James who died.

Cosby began to shine shoes as way of earning money to help support his family when he was nine years old. He learned at an early age that humor was a way to get what he wanted. He was good in school but was not motivated so he dropped out of high school to join the U.S. Navy and later college to become a stand-up comedian.

In the Navy, Cosby served as a medical aide on ships and also joined the track team. He received his high school equivalency diploma in the Navy, and went on to Temple University where he had earned a track scholarship. While in college he earned an income as a bartender in a coffee house where he told jokes. Discovering he had a talent for this he decided to leave college and pursue telling jokes as a career.

Cosby married Camille in 1964 and suffered a great personal loss when their son, Ennis was killed in 1997. He had been shot while changing a tire along the side of a California highway. At the same time Cosby became embroiled in a paternity suit filed by Autumn Jackson claiming he was her father and demanding $40 million. She was later arrested and sentenced to 26 months in jail. These personal difficulties had Cosby take on a new profession as children’s book author.
