DeGeneres was born and raised in Metairie, Louisiana to Elizabeth Jane Pfeffer and Elliott Everett DeGeneres. She has one brother. Raised as a Christian Scientist, DeGeneres left the religion at age thirteen. She graduated from Atlanta High School in Atlanta, Texas, where she had moved to at age 15 with her mother and stepfather. She attended the University of New Orleans as a communications major, but left school after one semester. She held various jobs for a few years, including working in retail and being a waitress.
She began doing stand-up comedy in her early 30s. Within two years, she had become successful enough to tour nationally. Since that time, DeGeneres has become a world-famous comedian and has played roles in dozens of films and television shows.
In 1997, during one of her appearances on Oprah, DeGeneres came out as lesbian. Later that year, her character on her television show Ellen also came out as gay, which made DeGeneres the first woman to be a lesbian and simultaneously play a lesbian character on television. DeGeneres dated Portia de Rossi for a long time and eventually married her in 2008. Since coming out, DeGeneres has been a huge advocate for LGBT community.
