James Christian Kimmel was born on November 13, 1967 to James and Joan Kimmel. He is the eldest of three children. Although he was born in Brooklyn, New York, he mostly grew up in Las Vegas, Nevada, where his family moved when he was nine years old. He was an excellent student throughout his education and received all A’s in high school. Kimmel attended the University of Nevada in Las Vegas for one year and Arizona State University for two but never obtained a degree.

He married his first wife, Gina Maddy, in 1988. They had two children together, Kevin and Katherine, but divorced in 2002. Mr. Kimmel would go on to date comedienne Sarah Silverman for five years, the two splitting in March of 2009. In October 2009, he began a relationship with Molly McNearney, co-head writer for Jimmy Kimmel Live! They married in July 2013, and welcomed a daughter, Jane Kimmel, in July of 2014.

In October of 2014, Jimmy Kimmel sold his Hollywood Hills home $2,178,200. According to public records, he purchased the home in 2002 for $925,000.

Kimmel has hosted the American Music Awards five times so far. He is himself musically inclined, playing the bass clarinet.
