Freeman was born in Memphis, Tennessee on June 1 1937. Freeman’s mother was a teacher and his father was a barber. His mother, Mayme Edma, died in 2000, while his father died in 1961 after contracting cirrhosis.
He acted briefly as a child before joining the United States Air Force for four years, before returning back to the US and moving to Los Angeles, where he began acting again.
He built his reputation on the television initially, starring in Another World and Electric Company. Freeman continued acting and started appearing in movies in the 1980s. In 1987, he played a role in Street Smart alongside Christopher Reeve and Kathy Baker, a film which was received positively by his critics.
Freeman’s arguably biggest performance came in 1994, when he played Red in The Shawshank Redemption – a movie which received seven Oscar nominations, including Freeman for Best Actor. Despite not winning an Academy Award, The Shawshank Redemption is currently ranked as the top film on the Internet Movie Database.
Established as a leading actor in Hollywood, Freeman went onto appear in some of the industries most notable productions such as Deep Impact and Invictus. He also received an Academy Award for the Best Supporting Actor in the 2005 film Million Dollar Baby.

The 78-year-old is currently filming for Ben-Hur, an adaptation of Les Wallace’s 1880 novel Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ. The movie is set to be released in February 2016.
