About Tina Fey
Fey was born in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania to parents Zenobia and Donald Henry Fey. Fey’s parents exposed her to comedy during her childhood. She went to comedic plays with her family and stayed up late at night to watch Saturday Night Live and other comedies on television with her parents. Fey knew that she was interested in comedy at an early age. Upon graduating high school, she attended the University of Virginia with a degree in drama.
Fey performed with The Second City, which is an improv comedy group. One of the men she met there went on to work for Saturday Night Live and was eventually able to get Fey a job with the show as a writer. After a couple of years with the show, Fey became the first female head writer. She eventually began appearing in various skits with the show, and was eventually given a regular segment, which she shared with Jimmy Fallon.
While working for Saturday Night Live, Fey created an idea for a new comedy and pitched it to NBC. The idea was rejected, but later it was revised and accepted in 2003. Fey worked on filming the pilot episode, which aired in 2006 under the title 30 Rock. The show went on to air for six consecutive seasons and won several awards, including three Golden Globe Awards for Outstanding Comedy Series. Fey herself was nominated for several awards for her acting in the series.
In 2015, Fey became the creator and producer of yet another critically acclaimed television series, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. Originally pitched to NBC, the series was eventually sold to Netflix, who immediately renewed the show for a second season.
Throughout her career, Fey has appeared in a number of successful movies, in addition to directing and writing movies. Her most successful movie, Mean Girls, was the first time that she had appeared in a movie that she had written. Other successful movies in which Fey has starred include Baby Mama, with co-star Amy Poehler, Date Night, with Steve Carrell, and This is Where I Leave You, a comedy released in 2014.
Fey is active in and supports a number of charities. She supports Autism Speaks, an organization which does autism research. She has hosted a comedy night in order to raise funds for the organization. She also supports charities such as Mercy Corps, an organization fighting to end world hunger. She narrated a video for the group in order to help raise awareness.
In 1994, Fey began dating Jeff Richmond, whom she had met two years earlier. In 2001, the two were married in a Greek Orthodox wedding. Together the couple has two daughters, born in 2005 and 2011.
