Underwood was born on March 10, 1983 in Muskogee, Oklahoma to Carole and Stephen Underwood. She was raised on a farm in a rural Oklahoma town called Checotah. She traveled to Nashville, Tennessee in 1996 to sign a contract with Capitol Records. However, the contract was withdrawn when management at Capitol Records changed. Underwood went on to graduate high school as salutatorian and later attended Northeastern State University, where she graduated magna cum laude with a degree in mass communication. Before auditioning for American Idol, Underwood performed at local events and participated in multiple beauty pageants.
Underwood auditioned for American Idol in Saint Louis, Missouri. During her time on the show, the judges repeatedly predicted that she would do well, if not win, on that season of the show. After the season ended, it was revealed that Underwood had won the majority of the votes each week by a decent margin. Her fans called themselves “Carrie’s Care Bears.” When Underwood won American Idol, she received a recording contract, access to a private jet for a year, and a Ford Mustang.
