Ja Rule made his fortune from his rapping skills. His started his rap career with a hip hop group known as the Cash Money Click in 1993. He worked with the group for two years before getting a deal to appear on Mic Geronimo’s ‘Time to Build.’ His first big deal was with Def Jam in 1998. He was able to have a few of his songs make it to the Billboard Hot 100 Chart. Among the songs that made it to the chart are “Between Me and You”, “Mesmerize”,”Always on Time”, and “I’m Real”. Since 1999 his seven studio album has sold over 30 million copies. The album has been loved by the people as reflected by this sales.
In 2001 he was recognized as one of the best selling rapper artists.

Ja Rule was raise in Jehovah Witness Family by his mother. His mother Debra Atkins was a health care worker and they lived with Ja Rule’s grandparents. He was 5 years when his little sister was born and died shortly after. The cause of death was listed as due to breathing complications. He attended Public School 134 in Hollis which he described as having a predominantly black student body. At school Ja Rule says he got to many fights because of his small body. He was later transferred to Middle School 172 in Glen Oaks, described by Ja Rule as a white school. He earned his GED in February 2012.
The music industry is rife with competition which saw Ja Rule get in to a well publicized feud with fellow rappers such as Eminem and 50 Cent. Ja Rule found himself on the wrong side of the law when he was charged with being in possession of a gun. He was also sentenced for evading taxes in 2007 to 2008. He requested he be allowed to serve his taxes concurrently.
After his release from prison, he came under fire for making homophobic comments. This happened when he publicly lambasted MTV and accused it of airing stuff that was in appropriate for his children. MTV had earlier aired a documentary about “Married Life After Prison”. In this documentary, Ja Rule’s wife is reported to have said that Ja Rule left her for a cell mate. Ja Rule has since taken to Twitter to dismiss the claims.
In the tax evasion case,in which he was jailed and ordered to pay $1.1 million did little good to his career. Other rap artists, him included have been to prison without it negatively affecting their career. This negative effect, the tax evasion case had can be attributed to the fact that rap fans do not take financial difficulties positively. Overall, Ja Rule has had a successful career. Ja rule has also acted in several movies and his most famous was the movie “The Fast and the Furious”. About his homophobic comments, he has defended himself saying that his comments were taken out of context.
