About Bill O’Reilly

O’Reilly was born in New York City to parents William James, Sr. and Winifred Angela Drake O’Reilly. O’Reilly spent several years in post-secondary education, earning three degrees from a variety of schools. Most notably, he earned a Masters of Arts in Broadcast Journalism from Boston University, in addition to a Master of Public Administration from Harvard University. While O’Reilly was studying at Boston University, he was a reporter for a number of local newspapers. His course of study also involved an internship with the news station WBZ-TV.

After completing his degree at Boston University, O’Reilly got his start in the news world by working for various local news networks, including networks in Dallas, Texas and Scranton, Pennsylvania. He eventually became a news anchor for a WCBS-TV program, which was aired in New York at 7:30 in the morning. After winning an Emmy Award for his work on that program, he was promoted to CBS News correspondent. While working in this position, he covered important news, such as wars going on in El Salvador and the Falkland Islands. O’Reilly reported on these on location, the latter of which being reported from a base in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Following a dispute with CBS News about using uncredited footage that O’Reilly’s team in Buenos Aires filmed, he left CBS News. He was hired by ABC News as a correspondent. The hiring decision was made after the ABC News president heard O’Reilly deliver a eulogy for a late friend who had worked for ABC News. While at ABC, O’Reilly hosted various daytime shows which served as previews for the news that would be covered on the nightly news show. He also worked on general assignments for the station.

Upon completion of his degree from Harvard, O’Reilly was hired by Fox News Channel, which was just a startup channel at the time. He was hired to host a show titled The O’Reilly Report, which would air in 1996, but the show was later renamed The O’Reilly Factor, a name which has stuck for nearly two decades. Until 2009, O’Reilly also hosted a radio program called The Radio Factor, which was wildly popular, with over 3.25 million listeners.

In 1992, O’Reilly met his future wife, Maureen McPhilmy. The two wed in 1996. Together, the couple has two children – a daughter, born in 1998, and a son, born in 2003. O’Reilly and McPhilmy separated in 2010 and were divorced in 2011. They both currently reside in a suburb of New York City.
